Indominco has its two fostered schools participate in Jamboree on Earth

PT Indominco Mandiri had its two fostered senior high schools situated around the company participate in the Jamboree and Olympic on Science and Earth in Candi Prambanan Camping Ground in Yogyakarta on August 21-23, 2008. The event was held by University Pembangunan Nasional Yogyakarta in the framework of its 50 years of anniversary.

The support towards the two fostered high schools was a part of corporate social responsibility that is usually carried out by PT Indominco Mandiri through its Education Division of Community Development Department.

The two fostered senior highs are SMA Negeri 1 Teluk Pandan and SMA Negeri 2 Mrangkayu in Village Santan Ilir, Regency of Kutai Kertanegara. Each school is represented by its best five students accompanied by one teacher. The Jamboree and Olympic was attended by 18 senior high school contingents from various regions in Indonesia.

The participants were provided an insight into how important the natural resource is for the sake of state’s wealth and endurance. However, they were also reminded that it has potential to create disaster causing environmental damage and casualties. Incorrect management and natural disaster mitigation will weaken the state.

The material on earth science was provided in the form of lecture, discussion, quiz contest, paper, field trip, and outdoor activities. In field trip occasion, for example, the participants were invited to visit an earthquake resistant house, Region of Karst in Wonosari, and Tourist Region of Baron in the south of Yogyakarta.

“We hope this thematic jamboree could give our fostered students an awareness and outlook on earth,” Indominco’s Manager of Community Relation Muhammad Ilham said, adding that Indonesia has rich diverse natural resources, including geologist disaster potential.

“I convey my appreciation and gratitude to Indominco,” Administration Head of East Kutai Education Service Wagiman said. He hoped PT Indominco Mandiri could be more and more active in performing continuous and synergic corporate social responsibility.
